After choosing to pursue a deeper relationship with God last year, I've learned so much about Him. And boy, it has been a beautiful journey! For a long time, I have wanted to write a post about starting a Devo Life. But after lots of daily practice and seeing a big difference in my life, I now feel that I can share it with you gals! So, let's go! 1) Make time for God (even if it means sacrificing something or disciplining yourself) As teen gals (and guys too), life can be super busy. We wake up, get ready for school, go to school, do homework for a bunch of hours, eat dinner, then it's more homework, and lastly, it’s time for bed. But somewhere, we need to fit God in our lives. If you want to have a successful Devo Time, you have to make time to do it. Even if that means disciplining yourself or sacrificing some extra time. I would like to sleep until 7:30 a.m. on school days. I love the warm blankets, the marshmallow pillows, the hilarious dreams...sounds relaxing to me! But after giving it a lot of thought, I realized that my extra sleep didn't leave me with enough to have my Devo Time. So, "goodbye" extra sleep. "Hello" more Devo Time. Intriguing question:Why on earth would I ever do a thing like that? Simple answer:He gave up much more than sleep for me. So, I wake up at 6:30 every morning to hang out with God. I know that's crazy! But getting up early to be with God is like training myself for whatever happens in the next few seconds, minutes, hours, and even days. Challenge: Think of some things that you can give up to make more time for God. Giving up some extra sleep is what I needed to do. Your sacrifice or disciplinary action might be different. 2) Read your Bible Okay, I know what you’re thinking, “Of course you should read your Bible, it’s what Christians do.” But when I say “read” your Bible, really read your Bible. Let God speak to you through His Word, pay attention to what’s happening, and learn valuable stuff that you can apply to your life (I'm going to talk more about this in next Friday's post). 3) Pray with everything you have For the first time in my life, I’ve been talking to God on a regular basis. And boy, talking to Him has been so much fun! When I pray, it’s as if our conversation picks up right where we left off, and the joy from being in His presence springs up like a well in me! It makes me feel all fuzzy inside! So how do you get there? Let me explain. When you’re praying, one thing to keep in mind is that prayer is supposed to be a conversation; you know, talking with God as you do with your friends and family. Prayer allows us to talk to the Creator of the World and more importantly so He can speak to us. He wants us to be close to Him and, He wants to tell us things! So we should pray with the intention of wanting to get to know Him. Let me break this down even further. I pray with ACTS…not literally but figuratively.
Whew! Congratulations to those who finished reading this! When it comes to having a meaningful Devo Time, a lot is involved! Let me know how your Devo Time went!
